What Should Field Service Software Cost Per Tech?

By Mike Rhoads, Founder, NorthRidge Systems™·September 7, 2026

Comparing field service platforms on features is a trap. Every one of them has a longer list than you will ever use. The only comparison that survives contact with a real shop is cost per tech against money recovered per tech.

Put every quote on the same footing

Take the all in first year cost, including any one time fee, divide by twelve, then divide by the number of people who need a login. Now every quote is one number you can say out loud.

  • ·All in year one cost, subscription plus onboarding plus add ons.
  • ·Divided by twelve months.
  • ·Divided by total logins, field and office.
  • ·Compared against your average repair job margin.

The payback test

A system earns its place if it pays for itself with one job a month. For a residential drain shop, that job comes from one of three places: a call that would have gone to voicemail, a job priced correctly instead of guessed low, or a lining option the homeowner said yes to because the proposal made it easy.

If a platform cannot point at one of those three, the price does not matter. It is overhead.

What good looks like at 3 to 10 trucks

At this size you want a predictable monthly number, no implementation fee holding you hostage, and adoption measured in days rather than quarters. You also want the freedom to leave with your data.

FieldMetrx™ Core is $197 a month billed annually, or $297 month to month, covering up to five techs. That is under forty dollars a tech, and one recovered call usually clears it.

Frequently asked

What is a normal per tech software cost?

Small shop tools commonly land somewhere between roughly thirty and one hundred fifty dollars per user per month once seats and add ons are counted. The spread is wide, which is why the all in per login math matters more than the headline tier.

Should I pay annually or monthly?

Annual almost always costs less per month, but only commit once you have run real jobs through the system. A money back window makes that safe.

How fast should payback be?

One month. If a system cannot recover its own cost inside a month at your job values, it is not solving a money problem.
