Do I Qualify for a Real Field Service System, or Am I Too Small?

By Mike Rhoads, Founder, NorthRidge Systems™·September 7, 2026

Every week an owner with three trucks asks some version of the same thing. Am I big enough for this yet, or should I keep running the spreadsheet until I hire an office person?

It is a fair question and the usual answer, get bigger first, is backwards. Here is the actual test.

The size test, plainly

Purpose built field systems for residential sewer and drain are shaped around companies running roughly 3 to 10 trucks. Under that, a phone and a good price sheet still works. Over about fifteen trucks, you have a back office and the enterprise platforms start earning their fee.

  • ·1 to 2 trucks: a price book and a booking service is usually enough.
  • ·3 to 10 trucks: this is the zone. The owner is still the bottleneck and the system replaces the office you have not hired.
  • ·10 to 15 trucks: still a fit, usually on a larger build with more setup.
  • ·15 plus with a full back office: the enterprise platforms are genuinely a better match.

The workflow test that matters more than size

Size is a proxy. What actually decides it is whether these four things are true in your shop right now.

  • ·Calls go to voicemail after hours or during a busy afternoon.
  • ·A second year tech cannot price a liner or a replacement without calling you.
  • ·Proposals get sent that night or the next morning instead of from the driveway.
  • ·You know monthly revenue but not which job types actually made margin.

The revenue test

If one missed call a week is a repair job you never quoted, the system pays for itself before the software question is even interesting. At a few hundred dollars a month, the break even is roughly one saved job a quarter. Most shops in this zone are losing more than that in a bad week.

That is the honest math. Not features, not dashboards. Whether the leak you already have is bigger than the invoice.

Which tier you qualify for

FieldMetrx™ Core is self start, no application, $197 a month billed annually or $297 month to month, up to five techs, with a 30 day money back window. Falcon and Phoenix are larger builds with more setup and they go through an application so the fit gets confirmed both ways before anyone takes money.

If you are commercial, municipal, or running fifty crews, we will tell you straight that it is not the right fit.

Frequently asked

Do I qualify for FieldMetrx Core?

If you run residential sewer, drain, or trenchless work with up to five techs, yes. Core is self start with no application and has a 30 day money back window.

How many trucks do I need before software is worth it?

Around three is where the owner stops being able to hold it all in their head. Below that a price sheet and a booking service usually covers it.

Do I need an application for Falcon or Phoenix?

Yes. Those are larger builds with your price book and defect language loaded with you, so they go through an application first.

What if most of my work is commercial?

Then it is probably not a fit, and we would rather say so than take the deal. FieldMetrx is built for residential sewer and drain.
